Deliberate Practice Supervision Residencies

For supervisors licensed in California and Washington State

Learn Deliberate Practice Supervision at the most rigorous therapist training programs in the country!

Sentio Counseling Center’s one year residency is a special opportunity to learn and apply Deliberate Practice for supervision in a small group, under close mentoring by Tony Rousmaniere and Alexandre Vaz.  The Residency provides over 50 hours of video-based training in DP Supervision.  Supervisors who complete the DP Residency will receive up to 50 CEs and certification as DP Coach from the International DP Society. The Residency is offered for FREE under a work/trade program.

We offer Residency cohorts in California and Washington State two times a year:

Cohort #1: Starts in July, 2024

Cohort #2: Starts in January, 2025

Deliberate Practice (DP) is a new training method for enhancing skill rehearsal and feedback within traditional supervision.  A video demonstration of DP is here and more information is here.

The DP Supervision residency teaches you how to:

  • Integrate Deliberate Practice (DP) into traditional supervision

  • Increase the amount of skill rehearsal in supervision

  • Provide effective performance feedback

  • Ensure that trainees are rehearsing in their “zone of proximal development” (neither too hard nor too easy)

  • Develop custom DP exercises for specific models and common factors skills

  • Assign and evaluate DP homework

  • Use Deliberate Practice to develop the “Person of the Therapist” and therapist self-awareness

Schedule

Part 1: Three weeks of training: Participants will attend four weekly 1hr Zoom classes (date and class times TBD based on participant availability). Total hours: 1hrs/week (one zoom class)

Part 2: Eleven months of supervised practice: For the following 11 months participants will provide two hours of weekly individual videotaped Zoom supervision to MFT/PCC trainees, who are providing Zoom therapy through the Sentio Counseling Center. Participants will meet with Alexandre Vaz weekly for one hour group mentoring, in which they will receive feedback on their videos and engage in group DP skill-building exercises. Participants will supervise two trainees who will work under their license. Participants will be responsible for the usual work required for traditional supervision (evaluations, etc.) Total hours: 3hrs/week (one hour of group mentoring and 2hrs of providing supervision)

Continuing Education

Supervisors who participate in the Residency may be eligible to receive continuing education (CE) credit from Sentio University. Sentio University CEs can be claimed by all BBS licensees (LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs). Please note that these CEs cannot be claimed by psychologists or psychiatrists as we are not an APA-approved provider. Additionally, regulatory agencies of states outside of California may not recognize these CEs.

Weekly one-hour meetings with the supervisor training group are equivalent to one CE credit hour. These credit hours can be applied to the six hours of supervision CEs that the BBS requires as part of the license renewal process for supervisors. These credit hours can also be applied to non-specific CE requirements.

For more information about the weekly meetings, including educational goals, learning objectives, and topics covered, please review this syllabus.
